Addressing the Elective Dilemma

Updated: Jun 1, 2024

The best way to find and land an elective is to determine whether your medical school participates in VSLO (Visiting Student Learning Opportunities). At present, 8 Indian medical schools participate in VSLO which are listed below:

  • Kasturba Medical College, Manipal

  • Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore

  • Government Medical College, Chandigarh

  • B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad

  • Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana

  • J.S.S. Medical College, Mysore

  • Dr. P.S.I. Medical College, Chinoutpalli

  • Mallareddy Medical College for Women

If you find your medical school in the list mentioned above, congratulations! You're a lucky one. Now, VSLO offers a lot of university-based visiting student/elective programs. There could be more of these this year (2024-2025) that I might be missing, but keep an eye out for these programs:

  • University of Tennessee

  • University of Pittsburgh

  • Washington University in St. Louis

  • Yale University

  • Louisiana State University

  • Weill Cornell Medicine

  • University of New Mexico

  • Loyola University

  • University of North Dakota

  • Keck School of Medicine

  • Mayo Clinic

Now if you're from a medical school that doesn't participate in VSLO, you could still apply to the elective programs with an independent application process that can be accessed on their official websites. These include:

  • University of Alabama

  • University of Illinois, Chicago

  • University of North Carolina

  • Emory University

  • University of Miami

  • Kansas University Medical Center

  • University of Florida: Gainesville

  • University of Florida: Jacksonville

  • Florida International University

  • Marshall University/Joan C. Edwards SOM

  • Cleveland Clinic

  • Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

  • Kaiser Permanente, Santa Clara

  • Sinai Hospital of Baltimore

  • Johns Hopkins, Baltimore

  • University of Texas Southwestern, Dallas

  • Thomas Jefferson University

  • Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

In order to apply for these electives, you need to be aware of a handful of documents that most of the programs require as part of their application process. These include:

  • Step 1 Score Report

  • AAMC Standardized Immunization Form

  • COVID-19 Vaccination Record

  • Medical School Transcript

  • CV

  • Personal Statement

  • English Proficiency Test (TOEFL iBT/IELTS)

  • Dean's Letter of Support

  • Proof of Health Insurance

  • Proof of Liability Insurance

  • ACLS/BLS Certification

  • N-95 Mask Fit Verification (only for UPMC)

  • B1/B2 Visa

  • HIPAA Certificate

Application Timing:

While there isn't a specific start date for elective program applications, it's advisable to be proactive during March and April. This is typically when a lot of the programs begin their application window. Keep in mind that these applications typically cover elective bookings for the entire upcoming year. Therefore, delaying your application can significantly affect your elective opportunities for the entire year. (Exceptions exist, such as Mayo Clinic, which opens applications multiple times a year for limited durations.)

Bottom Line:

Having gone through the match cycle this year, I can attest to the significant impact that the quality of electives can have on your application and eventual residency match. Firstly, programs greatly value letters of recommendation from university faculty, which can enhance your application overall. Additionally, effective networking during such electives can substantially improve your chances of matching at those hospitals, particularly if you've demonstrated diligence during your rotations. So it's a no-brainer that pursuing university electives can notably enhance your prospects of matching there for residency.

I speak from experience, as I struggled to secure quality university electives due to starting my USMLE journey later than ideal. This resulted in a delay in completing Step 1 and applying during the prime application period of March/April.

Another valuable tip is to target electives during winter months, typically from November to February, as this is when most of the international medical students rotate in the US. Doing so can significantly enhance your chances of securing a university elective compared to applying during the summer, when most US medical students undertake their rotations.
